What Is Spirituality?

spirituality

Spirituality is about a sense of connection to something bigger than yourself. It includes beliefs and practices relating to transcendence, awe, gratitude, humility, acceptance, and love for yourself and others. The spirituality of a person may be religious or non-religious and can involve a variety of traditions and practices.

Those with a spiritual connection can feel the true essence of another person, and they are aware that their own core essence is part of that larger being as well. This deep intimacy also allows them to see and understand their loved ones with more clarity. In addition, they can feel a deeper understanding of their own inner struggles and can help them navigate through difficult times.

Studies have shown that a person’s spirituality can influence their emotional and physical wellbeing. For example, a person’s spirituality has been linked to greater life satisfaction and better job satisfaction, as well as a stronger immune system. The research has also found that a person’s spirituality has a direct relationship with their mental health.

For some, spirituality means a belief in God. For others, it can mean a feeling of awe or connection to nature. In our focus groups and interviews, people commonly drew connections between their spirituality and their ability to take action in the world and with other humans. This is because a person who feels spiritually connected to humanity, the natural world or a higher power is likely to take action in support of a worthy cause.
